Still scrolling? Can’t stop? It is addictive, isn’t it? Does it make you feel down, low or sad? This is social media anxiety disorder! However, it is something Head Agenda can help with. Carry on reading for the full guide on how to stop scrolling!

1. Set yourself a screentime limit!

Is your social media anxiety in need of some discipline? Make use of your smartphones! You can set screen limits or check how long you have spent on each social media app! And yes, don’t worry, it works for both IOS and Android users…. equal play! Limiting access to social media to 30 minutes a day can not only reduce FOMO but allow you time to focus on the present and focus on yourself – as a result helping reduce your social media anxiety.

Doing this will restrict access or give you breaks from social media. You can’t be put down by something you are not looking at now?

This will give you the ability to take control of using social media! Take control of your social media anxiety!

2. Create value through your feed:

Standards on social media can lead to depression through comparison to others and low self-esteem.

Try following accounts that add value to you. Those you look up to or those similar to you.  Or even brands you like or inspire you!

Following those who are like you can help you appreciate yourself rather than focusing on standards moulded by social media! Uplift yourself through social media rather than using it to see what others like and what other people define as ‘the best’.

This will:

- Create a positive change of perspective.

- Create purpose for using social media as a natural mood lifter!

All reducing that social media anxiety!

3. Remove the negativity:

What are the things that get you down from social media? What creates social media anxiety?

Seeing unrealistic standards being through body image or beauty?

Allowing the haters to get to you?

A platform for bullies?

Well don’t worry! Here is how to remove the negativity:

- Simply unfollow those who create those negative feelings.

- Remove or turn off the comments! Especially on social media platforms, like Instagram. They have allowed you control to switch off the notifications, comments, and number of likes. Yes, you have the freedom to post without worrying about the number of likes you receive.

Still scrolling? Here is the biggest one!

4. Distract yourself:

Using your phone is the biggest trigger in scrolling. So why not change this? Do something else!

But what else?

Get to know yourself:

- Who are you?

- What do you like?

- What are your hobbies? Interests?

If you don’t have any or are struggling to think, create new ones! Try different things. You can pick up new hobbies and interests and create a better you! Instead of caring about what other people are doing… care about yourself!

Still addicted to social media?

That’s completely fine, after you have gotten to know yourself, use social media as a memory platform for yourself rather than others. Make it yours!

I came to see Mandy in autumn 2019 for some CBT to deal with my anxiety which at times spiralled out of control for weeks/months at a time. Mandy was great, in the end doing a combination of both therapy and CBT to explore where the anxiety had come from, as well as how to put it back in its box. She was great at challenging me, which is just what I needed. An immediate affect was feeling significantly less nervous about flying. I now find myself in week 5 of the UK COVID lockdown, a time that is causing anxiety for so many people, and able to cope.
